Book Review: Shia Minorities in the Contemporary World

Review of the comparative volume on Shia minority communities — diasporic identity, transnational networks and ritual life.

About this book

Global migration flows in the 20th century have seen the emergence of Muslim diaspora and minority communities in Europe, North America and other parts of the world. While there is a growing body of research on Muslim minorities in various regional contexts, the particular experiences of Shi'a Muslim minorities across the globe have only received scant attention.

Bringing together case studies from Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South and South-East Asia, this volume explores the diversity of Shi'a minority experiences. It de-centres Shi'a Islam from the Middle East and South Asia and examines how migration, diaspora, transnational networks and multilocality shape Shi'a communities, their religious authorities and their ritual life.
